William Henry Cotton, age 75, of Richmond, VA, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, at Sitter & Barfoot Veteran Care Center. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Reverend James and Lucy Colton; his sisters Catherine Barbour and Ella Mae Dew; and his brother Joseph Cotton.
Born on May 22, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William answered the call to serve his country at a young age, joining the United States Army in the fall of 1968 at just 19 years old. Over the course of a distinguished military career, he rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class and retired with honor after many years of dedicated service. Continuing his life of service, William later retired from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department, where he served his community with the same integrity and pride.
William will be remembered for his kind heart, warm spirit, and unmistakable laugh. He had a great sense of humor and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. An avid movie watcher, William found joy in storytelling on screen and was always ready to share a favorite film or discover a new one.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Amanda Dieu (Hoang); his cherished grandchildren, Cameron and Tai, who were the pride and joy of his life; his devoted sister, Carolyn Wilkerson; his brother, Robert Cotton (Sandy); and a host of extended family members and loved ones who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
William’s life was one of service, compassion, and quiet strength. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
The final arrangements are complete. There will be a 11:30 Visitation and a 12 Noon Celebration of His Life Ceremony conducted on Monday, April 21, 2025 at the Headquarters/Galleria for Lori’s Funeral Home which is located at 1110 Holmes Street, Raleigh, NC 27610. The Burial will immediately follow the service at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Raleigh.
