Thomas W. McFarland, Jr. Obituary
Thomas ("Tom") W. McFarland, Jr., a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather passed away peacefully in North Carolina, on May 22, 2025, he was 77.
Tom was born on September 16, 1947, to the late Thomas Warren McFarland and Muriel Ethel (Demers) McFarland. Tom was the second oldest of their 7 children, and the oldest of 3 boys. He was raised in Everett MA, graduated from Everett High School in 1965, and received a BS in Finance from Boston College in 1969. Tom was known for his great aptitude with advanced mathematics.
Some of Tom's fondest childhood memories were the summers he spent with his grandparents, Elmer and Lillian Demers, at their beachfront summer cottage at 39 River Rd., on Little Neck in Ipswich MA.
Immediately after college, Tom served in the US Army as an MP in Japan during the Vietnam war. Tom was also profoundly affected by his time working in an Army quadriplegic hospital.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Tom worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston where he met the love of his life, Peggy, and they married in NH on May 6, 1985. Tom and Peg settled in Winchester MA where they raised their son Jason.
On his 50th birthday, Tom testified with two coworkers in front of congress's subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy.
Tom and Peg retired together in 2003 from "The Fed" after 30+ years of service. They became snowbirds after buying their winter home in Punta Gorda Florida, and summering in Winchester and later North Reading MA.
Tom was extremely bright, honest, resolute, and generous, enjoyed playing cards, boating, nature and golfing--always a giver and never a taker. Most notably, Tom had a keen, quick wit and the ability to see some humor in all situations.
Tom felt compelled to help relieve the suffering of others even if it was to his own detriment. He often treated his siblings and their children to his time and attention, generous gifts, as well as concerts, sporting events, and trips to Disney World. But it was Christmas when Tom and Peg's great generosity was most evident.
Tom was also devoted to his parents, siblings and their spouses, their children and grandchildren as well as extended family.
He is survived by his beloved wife Peggy (Lee) McFarland. Devoted father of Jason McFarland, his wife Allison and their three boys Monroe, Oscar, and Harry. Tom and Peg eventually relocated their summer residence to North Carolina to be nearer to Jason, Allison, and their grandchildren.
Tom is the brother of Muriel L. Fallon & her husband Richard of Stoneham, Patricia M. Stornanti & her husband Frank of Reading, Mary L. McFarland of ME, Stephen J. McFarland & his wife Virginia of Groton, Kevin A. McFarland & his wife Cynthia of Danversport and the late Kathleen A. McFarland of Everett. Tom is also survived by many nephews, a niece, as well as many grandnephews and nieces.
Tom will be missed beyond measure, but his legacy lives on in the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the memories that will forever remain in our hearts.
Private services are to be held at a later date in Massachusetts.
