Amanda Laverne Goggins

Amanda LaVerne Goggins, 71, of Durham, NC, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Duke Hospital. In life, she was a graduate of Walker Grant High School (1967, Fredericksburg, VA) and Virginia State College (1971, Petersburgh, VA). After college, she married, started a family, and traveled the country. While living in Hawaii, she began work at IBM. This career afforded her the opportunity to move to Durham, NC in 1987. She knew this was her forever home and began putting down strong roots. She served on the Hillisde High School PTA and then the Durham County School Board. She began practicing Buddhism and, in her later years, these beliefs kept her spirit strong. So, instead of her on going health issues diminishing her spirit, they made her more determined to build community - a community where everyone was welcome. She is survived by her daughter, Shanta L. Slade-Inabnitt (Steve); her sister, Eliza L. Williams; and numerous cousins and relatives. She has also left a legacy of family, friends, surrogate daughters, and coworkers who are stronger because of her persistence, determination, and perseverance.
